How to choose a kitchen worktop

How do you choose the best built-in hob for your kitchen?
1. Consider the kitchen layout first

Always decide on the position of the hob during the kitchen design phase itself, as the worktop must be cut to the exact dimensions of the hob, and this must be done before the cabinets are fitted.

2. Chimney alignment

When planning your cupboards, make sure the flue is perfectly aligned above the hob.

3. Installation of the gas hob

The cooker must be installed by a professional, who will ensure that the hob and flue are perfectly aligned and will cut the worktop to the exact dimensions specified by the manufacturer.

4. The surface material of the hob

A stainless steel hob is less expensive than a glass one; whilst both options look good, a glass hob is not as prone to scratching as a stainless steel one.
– Number of burners

Hobs are available with 3 to 5 burners, so always choose one that takes into account the largest size of the pots and pans you use regularly.
There should also be enough space between the burners to easily accommodate pots and pans of different sizes.
6. Cleaning the hob

If you choose a stainless steel worktop, avoid using steel scourers, as these can scratch the surface.
You can use a damp microfibre cloth or sponge to clean up spills and stains, then wipe the area with a soft, dry cloth.
Use only gentle, organic cleaning products on the surface.
Avoid cleaning with too much water, as if it gets into the burner openings, it won’t light until it has dried.
